How do I know if I need Long-Term Care?

The risk of falling or having an accident, developing a serious health condition or disability, having a heart attack or stroke, decrease in good habits like nutrition or exercise are things that increase as we age. There are a variety of factors that can play a role when deciding if Long-Term Care is for you. Age, gender, marital status, lifestyle, and health, and family history are the biggest contributors to increasing the risk of needing long-term care.

If you are gradually starting to need help with basic tasks, looking into Long-Term Care options is something you might want to consider. Long-Term Care services are available in a residential setting (also called a group home or board and care home), in-home setting, or nursing home setting. When beginning your search for Long-Term Care for the elderly you may want to consider other things your loved one may need assistance with, like transportation, medication reminders, or running errands.

Long-Term Care for seniors is not meant to impose on an individual's independence. Caretakers providing Long-Term Care are there to help the elderly with basic needs: bathing, dressing, personal care needs, transferring, and eating - so they can continue to live their lives and be safe.

Long-Term Residential Care

Long-term residential care for seniors includes a wide range of medical and support services provided over an extended period of time. Long-term residential care lets seniors live as independently as they can in a safe environment with around-the-clock supervision. There are two categories of long-term residential care services: Personal Care and Skilled Care.

Personal care provides assistance with activities of daily living and/or provides supervision of an individual who is cognitively impaired. Activities of daily living include bathing, dressing, grooming, toileting, eating, and transferring.

Skilled care includes nursing, physical therapy, occupational therapy, and medication management. These services are provided by a licensed professional.

"If anyone is tasked with finding a home for an aging parent or loved one, look no further. The home setting and wonderful caregivers make this difficult decision easy. My MIL could no longer live independently, and we struggled with finding just the right place where she would still feel like she had a home. 4 Seasons has houses in residential neighborhoods and the staff to resident ratio gives us peace of mind knowing she gets the attention and help she needs."
